It is unlawful to harass a person because of that person’s sex, religion, race, sexual orientation, age or disability.
With respect to sexual harassment, it can include “sexual harassment” or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. Harassment itself does not need to be of sexual nature, however, and can include offensive remarks about a person’s sex.
Simple teasing, cursing, or offhand comments, that are not very serious may not be illegal but when it becomes severe and creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision like a demotion, it can be illegal.
The harasser can be a customer, a supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or a vendor to your employer.
